Shipping containers are sold in several condition categories. Understanding these grades helps you choose a unit that matches your intended use, appearance expectations and budget.

A container with cosmetic wear may still be perfectly suitable for secure storage, while freight, conversion or customer-facing applications may require a newer or higher-grade unit.

01 Premium Condition

One-Trip / New Container

One-trip containers are among the newest units commonly available. They have usually completed a single cargo journey from the manufacturing location before entering the resale market.

What to Expect

  • Minimal overall wear compared with older used containers
  • Cleaner exterior and interior appearance
  • Good door seals and locking hardware
  • Strong floors with limited operational wear
  • Minor handling marks, scratches or small dents may still be present

02 Working Condition

Cargo-Worthy

Cargo-worthy containers are used units considered structurally serviceable for cargo transportation, subject to applicable inspection, certification and carrier requirements.

Wind & Watertight

A refurbished container is generally a used container that has received additional work to improve its functionality or appearance. Refurbishment is not a universal industry grade, so the exact work completed should always be confirmed before purchase.

Depending on the seller and unit, refurbishment may include rust treatment, repainting, door servicing, seal replacement, flooring repairs or other maintenance.

Condition Grade Does Not Mean Perfect Appearance.

Shipping containers are industrial transport equipment. Even a structurally sound used container can have scratches, dents, surface corrosion, faded paint, patches and signs of previous handling.

Condition grades should therefore be considered in relation to functionality and intended use rather than cosmetic appearance alone.

Key Areas to Inspect or Confirm

Structural Condition

Review the roof, side walls, corner posts, rails and frame for excessive deformation, major repairs or severe corrosion.

Doors

Check that the doors open and close appropriately and that locking bars, handles and hinges function as expected.

Door Seals

Gaskets should be checked for missing sections, major damage or deterioration that could affect weather resistance.

Floor Condition

Look for damaged boards, soft areas, holes, contamination, major delamination or repairs that may affect your intended use.
